Phew is it hot!

I live in the Midwest, Kansas specifically. It is really hot here. Right now it's 95 degrees the last time I looked. I wonder how they made it when there wasn't any air conditioning? In the 1800's they wore long dresses, corsets, bloomers, and a under top. How did they handle it? I wear shorts and tank tops and still feel on fire. They worked long days in the sun in that get up. How could you keep from getting heat stroke? I mean seriously. If you know, let me know.
